For State Legislators
Thank you for visiting this site to learn more about the issue of legally sealed birth certificates in the United States.
We wish to dispel myths and misconceptions regarding the legal sealing of birth certificates, and believe your colleagues in open states would be the best source of information for you.
We urge you to speak with your peers in Kansas and Alaska, two states that have never sealed birth certificates from adopted adults. We also ask that you speak with legislators in Oregon, Alabama, New Hampshire and Maine, the four states that have passed legislation that gives adopted adults unconditional access to their birth certificates.
We invite you to speak with former Maine Senator, Paula Benoit, who successfully proposed and passed restored access legislation in her state.
Our request is simple and has no fiscal impact on the state. We want all adults to have equal access to their birth certificates.
As the most recent state to pass legislation giving adopted adults equal access to their birth certificates, we suggest reviewing Maine LD 1084, as model legislation that may be proposed in your state to champion equality for all adults regardless of birth status.
We request you sponsor unconditional restored access on behalf of the adopted constituents in your district.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important equal rights issue.
