Empowering our community to advocate restoring birth certificate access for adoptees and letting our state legislators know our intentions is an urgent need.
The 2008 New Orleans Adoptee Rights Demonstration and 2009 Philadelphia Adoptee Rights Demonstration were positive steps in this direction. Contacts were made with hundreds of representatives across the country, and our booth at the Annual Summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures spoke volumes towards the importance we placed on this issue. Many legislators were unaware and astonished that their own constituents were being denied access to their original birth certificates.
Supporters who were in attendance felt inspired to join with others in their state towards working to repeal these unjust laws, or starting grassroots movements to educate and organize themselves in states where no group currently exists.
We believe an annual presence at the NCSL Summit demonstrates the importance of this issue, and awakens those impacted by secrecy laws and subsequent treatment by states withholding personal information at various vital information offices across the country. A presence inside the booth is crucial to prove the seriousness of our intent to those who need to hear the message.
We need your help to make this happen.
The Louisiana Adoptee Rights Demonstration has a target goal of $5,000 for the protest. This money will be used to pay for permits, security, advertising, materials as well as the booth inside the convention center. We also wish to offer a workshop for participants and an actual NCSL Session for Legislators moderated by Senator Paula Benoit of Adoptee CARE.
Your donation to the Louisville Adoptee Rights Demonstration will help make this goal a reality. No amount is too small – every contribution is deeply appreciated and urgently needed.
We hope you will consider supporting the Demonstration.
Your purchases at our CafePress and Printfection stores also help us reach our goal. 20% is added to the base price of every item, and all proceeds go to The Louisville Adoptee Rights Demonstration.
